A traditional German dessert made with thin layers of pastry filled with spiced apples, raisins, and cinnamon.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the apples, sugar, cinnamon, raisins, and walnuts.
  3. On a clean surface, lay out a sheet of phyllo dough and brush with melted butter.
  4. Layer several sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter.
  5. Spread breadcrumbs over the phyllo dough.
  6. Add the apple mixture on top of the breadcrumbs.
  7. Roll the dough tightly, starting from one end.
  8. Place on a baking sheet and brush the top with beaten egg.
  9. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until golden brown.
  10. Let cool before serving.

Notes

  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • For a richer flavor, add a splash of rum to the apple mixture.
