Traditional German Christmas bread filled with dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound flour
  • 1/2 pound sugar
  • 1/2 pound butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 ounce yeast
  • 1/2 pound raisins
  • 1/2 pound currants
  • 1/4 pound almonds, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 cup candied citrus peel
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix yeast with warm milk and let it activate.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and spices.
  3. Add the activated yeast mixture and melted butter to the dry ingredients.
  4. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, then incorporate the fruits and nuts.
  5. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
  6. Let it rise in a warm place for about an hour.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Allow to cool, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • For best flavor, store wrapped in foil for a few days before serving.
  • Customize with different dried fruits or nuts as desired.
