Traditional German Christmas bread filled with dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup currants
  • 1 cup chopped mixed candied citrus peel
  • 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine raisins, currants, and candied citrus peel with lemon zest.
  2. In another bowl, mix flour, yeast, spices, salt, and sugar.
  3. Warm milk slightly and add to the dry ingredients along with butter, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Incorporate the fruit mixture and almonds into the dough.
  5. Knead the dough until smooth, then let it rise for about 1 hour.
  6. Shape the dough into a loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 45 minutes.
  8. Let the bread cool, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks for best flavor.
  • For a richer flavor, let the bread sit for a few days before slicing.
