Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, a classic German dessert, is known for its rich flavors of chocolate, cherries, and cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups pitted sour cherries
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup Kirsch (cherry schnapps)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and hot water; mix until smooth.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  5. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  6. Once cooled, slice each cake in half horizontally to create 4 layers.
  7. Soak the layers with Kirsch and layer them with whipped cream and cherries between each.
  8. Frost the outer layer with whipped cream, and decorate with chocolate shavings and cherries.
  9. Chill before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure to use high-quality cocoa powder for the best flavor.
  • Chilling the cake allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.
